Cannabidiol and cannabis – are they both the same? Or are they two different substances? Both are dominating wellness trends, but some people support only cannabidiol, not cannabis. Let’s start with what makes these two different.
Also known as marijuana and weed, the cannabis plant boasts several benefits for your health. It contains hundreds of cannabinoids and terpenes. These compounds have therapeutic properties. Science shows that cannabis can help relieve stress and anxiety as well as lower inflammation.
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. Research has ben taking special interest in this particular compound due to its many health-benefiting properties. Today, there are several CBD products including CBD oils, tinctures, gummies, teas, edibles, and more.
Are They Safe?
There are negative side effects associated with both cannabis and cannabidiol. However, the latter is relatively safer. You see, cannabis contains many cannabinoids including tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is the psychoactive component which is responsible for making people euphoric. This is the first reason why some people do not prefer cannabis.
Then there comes cannabidiol which can come with and without THC and other compounds. Full spectrum CBD contains THC in low amounts and other plant components as well. On the other hand, CBD isolate doesn’t comprise of any other compounds, just pure CBD extract. Most experts claim that CBD is safe.
The ingredient comes with mild negative side effects such as nausea, and dry mouth. On the other hand, cannabis is associated to a number of nasty side effects. These include higher risk of certain cancers, risk of addiction, risk of cognitive impairment, certain psychological conditions, and even mood disorders.
Many states have legalized hemp which is the type of cannabis with higher CBD and lower THC. The other type is marijuana which has higher THC content and lower CBD. However, the Food and Drug Administration has reservations against CBD as well. Even though it has approved two CBD-based drugs for epilepsy.
Basically, officials believe that CBD can cause liver damage in the long run. Studies on the substance are still in their infancy – a lot more research is needed in this area. This means that neither cannabis, nor CBD is entirely in the clear. However, CBD has a comparatively better reputation with many people claiming that it has improved their life. Note that both can be consumed in different ways and how they are taken also plays a role in how they affect your health.
Both CBD and cannabis are different even though they are closely related. Cannabidiol has a better health profile and has more favourable studies on its side. On the other hand, there are some serious risks associated to cannabis. This is why most people prefer CBD, but not cannabis. The FDA is positive about neither, even though state governments are starting to accept both.
