A recent study found that fatty meals can increase the absorption of CBD. The Epilepsia journal published this study. Such a finding can have a significant impact on how much of a CBD dose, patients of epilepsy should take.
High Fat Foods’ Effect On Cannabidiol Absorption
Researchers from the University of Minnesota conducted this study. They assessed whether consuming fatty meals following CBD intake increased its absorption into the body. They also checked whether a high fat meal or fasting had a more substantial effect.
For the purpose of the study, the team measured the concentrations of CBD in epilepsy patients. These patients were consuming 99% pure cannabidiol and belonged to the MINCEP Epilepsy Care clinic. Then, researchers compared the CBD concentrations in patients who ingested the capsules on an empty stomach with those who ate a standardized fatty breakfast.
It was found that fatty foods increased the absorption of CBD in the body. However, how much CBD was absorbed varied. That is because not all foods comprise equal amounts of fat. This finding that can lower the costs of medications as less CBD would be needed when taken with a fatty meal.
Angela Birnbaum, co-author of the study said, “This study shows that CBD concentrations could vary significantly if patients take it differently, sometimes with or without food. Variations in blood concentrations could leave a patient more susceptible to seizures.”
Findings Of The Study
The team made the following findings:
- Fatty foods increased the exposure of CBD.
- Compared to fasting, taking cannabidiol with high fatty foods increase CBD absorption by four times. High fat foods increased CBD absorption maximum by fourteen times.
- Researchers did not notice any changes in cognition
Cannabis Absorption In The Body
The delivery mode of CBD is a major factor which influences how much cannabidiol is absorbed into your body. Some methods of ingestion make CBD more bioavailable than others. The sublingual intake of cannabidiol is highly bioavailable. Vaping CBD also allows for higher CBD absorption. Comparatively oral consumption in the form of capsules and treats is not as bioavailable.
This is because in oral consumption, CBD has to pass through the digestive system after which it reaches the bloodstream. Vaping, on the other hand, diffuses CBD directly from the lungs to the blood. As for sublingual use, in that method CBD goes from the mucosa under the tongue into the blood. This is also a direct route.
There are several factors which determine the bioavailability of CBD. The absorption of CBD can be increased when it is taken through particular delivery modes. It can also be raised when CBD is combined with some carrier oils. A new research shows that consuming CBD with a fatty meal can substantially boost the compound’s absorption into the blood.
