Cannabidiol, in short CBD, is different from tetrahydrocannabinol. It doesn’t have any psychotropic effects. So far research is in its infancy, but definitely promising. Studies do show that CBD, just as other cannabinoids, is not great for the mental health of adolescents. However, its benefits for some health conditions among children are far greater than any negative effects.
CBD for Children
This cannabinoid comes from the cannabis plant, hemp. There are several cases of people claiming that CBD has saved the lives of their children from debilitating disease. A drug called Epidiolex has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of two rare forms of epilepsy among children. These are Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome and Dravet Syndrome.
CBD shows a lot of potential in the treatment of seizures. It can reduce the severity and frequency of seizure episodes. Other than this, some parents use CBD to help their children with ADHD and autism. Interestingly, they have noticed great results from doing so. Cannabidiol is also used for the treatment of anxiety, panic attacks, and hyperactivity among children.
Side Effects Of CBD
There are several side effects associated with cannabidiol. However, all drugs for medicinal use come with a wide range of negative side effects. In case of CBD, these include sleep issues, reduced appetite, rashes, diarrhea, lethargy, and weakness.
Other more serious, though rare side effects include depression, suicidality, aggression, and liver disease. Unfortunately, there is a lot of research still needed on CBD to confirm its safety.
Choosing CBD Products For Children
The one major downside of CBD is that is its unregulated. CBD is legal in most states, provided THC content is lower than 0.3%. Parents who know their children need CBD often are willing to even move across states to access it legally.
However, buying CBD products is not easy. There are several products that do not contain any CBD or the amount advertised. There’s also the fact that many include chemicals that ruin the effectiveness or potency of a product. Looking at how many factors you need to consider when buying CBD, you should not purchase CBD online.
That said, when buying CBD look at:
- The label and what it reads
- Third party tests’ results for verification
- Where the product has been manufactured
CBD Products For Children
There are many products that you can give to your child. Commonly people give CBD oils or gummies to their children. Though gummies seem like a better option, those can be high in sugar and dosing them accurately is a challenging task. CBD can also be mixed into foods.
Should You Give Your Child CBD?
It is best to keep CBD away from your child if he or she doesn’t need it. However, some health conditions may require you to use CBD for treatment. But, don’t give your child CBD without first consulting a professional. Particularly if your child is also taking other medications or supplements as CBD may interact with those.
