Full Spectrum CBD, Broad Spectrum CBD, and CBD Isolate – What’s The Difference?


When looking for cannabidiol products to buy, you would have come across defining terms that may have left you confused. Basically, there are three types of CBD products available – full spectrum CBD, CBD isolate, and broad spectrum CBD.

All three are different from one another and used for serving differing purposes as well. Let’s jump into what these different types of cannabidiols are:

1 – Isolate CBD

CBD Isolate refers to the type of cannabidiol that is in its purest form minus any additions, natural or otherwise. For production, cannabidiol is first extracted from a plant such as cannabis or hemp. This is done through a process such as the CO2 or food-grade ethanol method.

Then, the extracted compound is further refined to bring out isolated CBD which is free of flavonoids or other active compounds. THC is non-existent in this type and hence, it doesn’t show positive for tetrahydrocannabinol testing.

This type of CBD is both tasteless and odorless. It is considered to be safe as well. The only con is that you only get the many benefits of cannabidiol; you miss out on the benefits of the whole plant.

2 – Full Spectrum CBD

Full spectrum CBD is less processed compared to CBD isolate. It contains other active cannabinoids in addition to cannabidiol. Moreover, full spectrum CBD also comprises of terpenes, flavonoids, and essential oils. With this type, users experience the complete benefits of the cannabis plant.

All the ingredients boost one another’s benefits something that is known as the “entourage effect.” It must be noted, however, that full spectrum CBD also contains THC. THC content is lower than 0.3% but this may make the full spectrum CBD product illegal in some states.

What’s more, tetrahydrocannabinol also has the negative side effect of making you high. THC is solely added because it also has medicinal properties even though it has a psychoactive nature.

3 – Broad Spectrum CBD

Broad spectrum CBD is very much like full spectrum CBD only that it doesn’t contain any THC. Therefore, in broad spectrum CBD, you find all the flavonoids, terpenes, etc. However, the psychoactive properties of THC are absent.

However, this type of CBD is hardly available all that easily. Furthermore, there’s very limited research on broad spectrum CBD. The taste and odor of this type are stronger and more natural.

Which Type Should You Go For?

At the end of the day, you cannot say that one of them is better than the others. Which type you should pick depends on your unique condition. If you cannot tolerate THC but want all other benefits of full spectrum CBD, go for broad spectrum CBD.

If your doctor told you that you need a high dose of only CBD, Isolate CBD would work best for you. Similarly, full spectrum is more suitable for those who want to enjoy the whole host of benefits of the herb.
