CBD is the magical elixir that can cure several ailments with just a few shots. Cannabidiol comes in many forms since it’s legalization and increase in popularity first in 2016 when the number of google searches for CBD exceeded those made for THC. Some people use it as an oil to directly apply it on their joints, some chew on CBD gummies to relieve anxiety, others take in a drop of a cannabidiol tincture to relax while yet others take it in supplement form to help their sleep.

Now a new research by Quartz in collaboration with the Harris Poll reveals that the majority of Americans are aware of CBD. In a survey conducted comprising of 2000 Americans, it was found that 86% of them had heard about CBD but only 20% had tried it and 7% regularly used it. Yet, it is estimated that the CBD industry, by 2020, is going to rise to $22 billion.

From the survey carried out, another aspect that became clear was how Americans used CBD. It was found that most used it as a wellness drug; 55% used it for relaxation, 50% did so for relieving stress and anxiety, 45% used it for improving sleep and 44% used it for relief from muscle pain while only 22% said they used it for fitting in socially. The survey’s revelations didn’t stop here; it also found that majority of the users who used CBD fell in the age bracket of 18 to 44.

This was double the number of CBD users above the age of 45. It was also concluded that while women used CBD more for wellness, men were more likely to stick to CBD use. But while most preferred CBD over prescription drugs without knowing much about it, 38% of them were also concerned about its unknown side effects. With the CBD industry growing increasingly, more and more researches are being carried out on the compound.

Research has so far found the many benefits that accompany CBD. It can alleviate anxiety, curb inflammation to soothe joint and muscle aches as well as help reduce stress and depression. Some studies also show that it has anti-cancer properties, can improve heart health, and also benefit brain health by preventing Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. In fact, another new research also shows that CBD has the ability to buffer the effects of THC. THC comes from the same cannabis plant as CBD but is its evil twin that has psychoactive properties.

However, it is not as if no adverse side effects have been associated with cannabidiol at all. Some studies have noted that it’s use can cause diarrhea, fatigue and changes in appetite. CBD may also interact with certain medications in an unpleasant way. This is why it is best to consult one’s doctor before using the compound to stay safe. Moreover, instead of daily use, it is better to use CBD only when needed.
